HISTORY OF THE 12 APOSTLES SHIP
“Twelve Apostles” is a legendary warship of the Imperial Russian Navy, and also the only one of its class.
Built at the Nikolayev Admiralty Yard – one of the most famous shipyards at that time, the ship was officially laid down on August 21, 1889, launched on September 13, 1890 and completed in Sevastopol in 1892.
The ship was equipped with two vertical three-cylinder steam engines built by Baltic Works, with a total capacity of 8,500 horsepower, and a weapon system consisting of two pairs of Obukhov Model 1877 caliber 12-inch (305 mm) guns mounted on twin mounts fore and aft.
After many years of service, “Twelve Apostles” was decommissioned in 1911, becoming a submarine depot in 1912. Notably, it was used as a filming location for “The Battleship Potemkin” (1925) – one of the world’s classic movies – before being officially decommissioned in 1931.
